Marriage Contracts

Islamic Marriage Contracts:

The Rabita Association conducts official Islamic marriage contracts or Islamic contracts accompanied by proof of a prior official contract, such as a marriage certificate issued by the Civil Registry or court. Those interested should apply to the Civil Registry (DVV) for a Marriage Impediment Investigation, which can be obtained by visiting the registry office or applying online through the following link (bank ID required):

Appointment and Certificate Issuance:

After the marriage permit is issued—usually within a week of the application—you can book an appointment for the contract by filling out the form below. The Rabita will issue a marriage certificate in both Finnish and Arabic, mentioning the agreed-upon dowry. The Rabita charges a fee for the contract and certificate, as detailed on the fees page.

Special Conditions and Documentation:

Contract conditions, especially financial ones, can be attached to the contract in a signed document by the spouses and witnesses, and registered with the Civil Registry. This document can include provisions such as financial independence for both parties and the agreed dowry (Avioehto). For more information:

Certificate of Singleness:

If the Civil Registry is unaware of the marital status of the prospective spouses, a certificate of singleness from the individual’s home country, properly authenticated by one of the Finnish embassies, is required. It is recommended to translate these certificates into English with an authorized translation in the country of origin before authenticating them at the Finnish embassy. If the certificate is authenticated in a non-English language, the holder may need to have it translated by an authorized translator in Finland into Finnish or Swedish.

Compliance with Civil Registry Requirements:

The Rabita does not conduct Islamic marriage contracts without the aforementioned permit from the Civil Registry or an official marriage contract. Civil Registry marriage contracts between Muslims are considered valid if they meet the condition of upright witnesses; otherwise, the couple will need to undergo an Islamic contract in addition to the official one.

Recommendation on Non-Official Islamic Marriage Contracts:
The Rabita does not recommend conducting non-official Islamic marriage contracts before completing official procedures, due to the absence of an Islamic judge to rule in cases of dispute, divorce, or annulment. For more information, see the Family Reconciliation page.
